Most countries across the globe observe January 1 st as New Year day following both the Gregorian and the Julian calendar. During the New Year we reflect on our life in the past year, the blessings and sorrows we went through and look forward to the New Year with much possibilities.
New Year is celebrated with much fun-fare often marked by fireworks, parades, parties and fairs across towns and cities. We love to celebrate the New Year in the company of our loved ones as per our own traditions and customs. Each culture has its own way of observing the New Year.
As part of his reform, Caesar instituted January 1st as the first day of the year, partly to honor the month's namesake: Janus, the Roman god of beginnings, whose two faces allowed him to look back into the past and forward into the future at the same time.
Certain colors like green, black and gold are not only great options for New Year's outfits, but they are also associated with meanings that will hopefully spark ambition, new beginnings and joy in the New Year. White is also worn in certain countries as part of the New Year attire signifying purity and the new beginnings.
Did you know? The Islands of Kiribati and Tonga, in the Pacific Ocean, are the first places to welcome the New Year, while American Samoa, Baker Island and Howland Island are among the last to welcome the New Year.
The Astrology of New Year
On New Year’s day the Sun is already well into the sign of Capricorn. Capricorn is an earthy sign ruled by the planet Saturn. So when Sun moves into this sign, we would be made to contemplate the karmic lessons from the past year. This transit of the Sun also encourages us to come up with new goals in life and take the first step towards the same.
In a way, New Years mark the beginning of a whole new cycle in our lives. All New Years start with an intense energy level with major astronomical forces starting to work. There would be a surge of our creative and spiritual energy levels around the New Year when we all are bound to take some New Year resolutions. However we see that the energy levels slowly start to wane off as the New Year proceeds into a few months and we lose steam.
New Years hold tremendous potential for growth and it is up to the individual zodiac signs to either utilize it or shirk away from it. New Years are a season of holidays when we can release the burden and fears of the past year and boldly step into a new one with renewed energy.
